product for your need

"To be sure, from your point of view your product is an instrument, a means for the appropriation of my product and for the satisfaction of your need" (p. 52 Marx).

This is the first time that I have seen a product referred to as an instrument. It seems to take away from the value of the product being sold. I have not taken any sort of economics classes, which may cause the terms and discussion of products to seem distant.
